Keep Moss and Algae Off Outdoor Stone Paving This Monsoon
Green, slippery paving every monsoon? How to clean moss off outdoor stone and seal it so moss and algae find it harder to grow back.

Every monsoon, outdoor stone in India turns green, so knowing how to prevent moss on stone paving matters in almost every home and housing society. Garden paths, pool surrounds, terrace paving, driveway borders and building steps pick up moss and algae, especially in shady corners that stay damp. Apart from looking neglected, the growth makes the surface slippery and slowly works into the stone’s pores.
This guide is for homeowners, society managers and landscape contractors who are tired of scrubbing the same paving every year. It covers how to clean the stone properly and then protect it with Vetro Power Professional Porous Stone Protector & Sealer, Moss Prevention Series, a penetrating sealer designed to make porous outdoor stone a harder place for moss to grow.

What the Vetro Power Porous Stone Protector & Sealer is (and when to use it)
This is a penetrating sealer for porous stone that is exposed outdoors. It:
- reduces water absorption;
- helps limit moss and algae growth within the stone;
- forms an invisible, breathable barrier without creating a surface film;
- does not change the stone’s appearance, texture or slip resistance;
- is aimed at long-term exterior protection where moisture exposure is frequent.
Moss and algae need water. By cutting how much water the stone absorbs, the sealer helps limit their growth. Because there is no film, the paving keeps its natural look and grip, which matters on walkways and around pools.

What you need
- Vetro Power Professional Porous Stone Protector & Sealer
- A stiff brush or scraper to remove moss
- A suitable stone cleaner for algae and moss, and plenty of clean water
- An applicator as given on the label (penetrating sealers are commonly applied by brush, roller or low-pressure sprayer)
- Absorbent material such as old cloths or sawdust for spills
- Safety glasses
Step-by-step: how to prevent moss on stone paving
- Pick a dry spell. Plan the work for the dry season or a reliable run of dry days. Sealing just before rain wastes your effort.
- Remove the moss. Scrape off thick growth and brush the surface. Clear moss from joints too.
- Deep clean the stone with a suitable algae and moss cleaner, following its label, then rinse well.
- Let it dry completely. A penetrating sealer needs clean, dry stone to soak into. Shaded areas take longer to dry.
- Protect nearby surfaces and plants, and keep run-off away from drains and garden ponds.
- Test a small area to check the result on your stone.
- Apply as per the label, covering the stone evenly and paying extra attention to joints, edges and permanently shaded corners.
- Clean up spills straight away. The safety data sheet warns that spilled product may make the floor slippery.
- Keep the area dry and free of foot traffic for the curing time stated on the label.
Tips and common mistakes
- Do not seal over moss or dirt. Anything left on the surface blocks penetration and can be locked in.
- Improve the conditions too: fix blocked drains, standing water and leaking planters, and trim plants that keep the paving permanently shaded.
- Sweep fallen leaves regularly; rotting leaves hold moisture against the stone.
- Avoid harsh pressure-washing on soft, porous stone, which can open up the surface.
- Check the paving after each monsoon and plan maintenance before growth gets established.
Safety and storage
The safety data sheet states that this product is not classified as hazardous. It is a colourless, odourless liquid that mixes with water (pH 5 to 6). Normal care with chemicals still applies.
- Ensure good ventilation and wear safety glasses.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while using it, and wash hands afterwards. Remove contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse.
- If it gets in eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes and get medical attention if pain or redness persists.
- Avoid release to the environment and keep it out of drains and open water.
- Store in a well-ventilated place with the container tightly closed, away from oxidising agents and protected from frost. As with any chemical, keep it out of reach of children.
