Sealing Limestone Without Darkening It: A Practical Guide
Light limestone can darken or blotch under the wrong sealer. Here's how to add stain protection while keeping its natural colour.

Light-coloured limestone, such as golden Jaisalmer or the pale beige stones used in villas and hotel lobbies, is loved for its soft, natural tone. It is also absorbent, so oil, tea and dirt stain it easily. The problem is that many protectors change its colour, leaving it darker or blotchy, which defeats the purpose of choosing a light stone. So how do you seal limestone without darkening it?
If you want stain protection that keeps the stone looking untreated, you need a colour-neutral protector. This guide is for homeowners, architects and contractors working with limestone and other colour-sensitive stone. We use Faber Guard-S, a solvent-based stain protector that preserves the natural look.

What Faber Guard-S is (and when to use it)
Faber Guard-S is a solvent-based, stain-resistant treatment for terracotta, natural stone and agglomerates. Its key feature is that it does not change the colour of the material and keeps its natural look. The data sheet names limestone specifically as the kind of colour-sensitive material it is ideal for.
It is UV-resistant, does not yellow over time and is suitable indoors and outdoors. Listed surfaces include limestone, marble, sandstone, granite, slate, basaltina, quartzite, porphyry, travertine, cotto, terracotta and marble-resin, marble-concrete and quartz-resin agglomerates.
It can also be used together with a deep-penetrating water-resistant sealer. In that system, the water-resistant product goes on first and Faber Guard-S goes on top once it is completely dry.
When not to use it: on wet or humid surfaces, on overheated surfaces, or on newly laid stone before the adhesive and grout have fully cured. If you actually want a darker, richer colour, a colour enhancer is the right product instead.
What you need
- Faber Guard-S (1 litre bottles)
- Lambswool applicator, roller or cloth
- Clean, dry cloths to remove residues
- Masking tape for skirting, walls and fittings
- White spirit for cleaning tools
- Solvent-resistant gloves, eye protection and a suitable mask
Step-by-step: How to seal limestone without darkening it using Faber Guard-S
- Clean the stone thoroughly. Remove all dust and dirt. Any stain left now will be sealed in, so deal with it first.
- Let it dry completely. Do not apply on wet or humid stone. Limestone holds moisture, so allow extra drying time after washing.
- Check conditions. Surface temperature should be between +5 and +40°C, and not overheated.
- Protect other areas. Mask anything not being treated.
- Test patch. Treat an unexposed area or spare tile and check that the colour stays as you want once dry.
- Apply a thin, even layer. Use a lambswool applicator, roller or cloth and cover the whole surface. Coverage is about 10 to 15 m² per litre.
- Wipe off residues. Faber Guard-S dries quickly. Remove any residue with a clean, dry cloth.
- Second coat on very absorbent stone. On highly absorbent materials apply a second coat, waiting at least 30 minutes between coats.
- Dry and reopen. It dries within 40 minutes. Resume use of the surface after 2 to 3 hours. Clean tools with white spirit.
Tips and common mistakes
- Test on the actual stone. Even a colour-neutral protector should be checked, because limestones vary a lot from quarry to quarry.
- Thin coats only. The data sheet calls for a thin, even layer; wipe any residue off with a clean, dry cloth.
- For a full system, apply a deep-penetrating water-resistant sealer first and let it dry completely before Faber Guard-S. The Faber W-Drop data sheet recommends Faber Guard-S on top to increase stain resistance.
- Clean spills quickly. Stain protection buys you time to wipe; it is not a reason to leave oil sitting on the stone.
- For maintenance the data sheet recommends Faber Neugel or Faber Algafloor daily, and FABER 30 or Faber Deterfug for heavy-duty cleaning, depending on the material.
Safety and storage
- Faber Guard-S is solvent-based with a flash point of 27°C, so it is flammable. Keep it away from flames, sparks and heat. No smoking.
- Wear suitable PPE and follow the product safety data sheet. Ventilate well and avoid breathing vapours.
- Keep children and pets away until the surface is dry.
- Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Shelf life is 24 months in the original sealed packaging.
Frequently asked questions
Will Faber Guard-S darken my limestone?
It is designed not to. The data sheet says it does not change the colour of the material and preserves its natural look, which is why it suits colour-sensitive stones like limestone. Always confirm with a test patch.
Can I use Faber Guard-S with a water-resistant sealer?
Yes. It can be applied in combination with a deep-penetrating water-resistant sealer. Apply the sealer first and wait until the surface is completely dry before applying Faber Guard-S.
How long before I can use the floor?
Faber Guard-S dries within about 40 minutes, and the data sheet says you can resume use after 2 to 3 hours.
